Global coronavirus death toll passes 3,000 with new China count

The first death from the novel coronavirus was confirmed in Washington state, along with the first infection in a healthcare professional (HCP) and the first potential outbreak in a long-term care facility, CDC officials said on Saturday. That brings the total to five dead in their county which is the only place in the nation to report fatalities in the coronavirus outbreak.

Authorities in the Seattle area reported four new cases Sunday night, including the man who died. Of the new cases announced in King County Monday three were connected to the facility, including two who died, a male in his 70s and a female in her 70s. Two others were a husband and wife who had recently traveled to Egypt, according to a news release from the Santa Clara Public Health Department. A number of cases have been confirmed in recent days in California, Washington and OR with no known contact with infected patients OR travel to places with the virus.

As of Sunday, the US had at least 80 confirmed cases of the virus, which first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China.

It is the second death in both Washington state and King County.

The Rhode Island Department of Health said they are monitoring 40 people who have had contact with the patient.

Kathy Lofy, Washington state's health officer, said cases were confined to two counties - King and Snohomish - but that it was possible it was spreading elsewhere.

King County Executive Dow Constantine added that his office is in the process of purchasing a motel and setting up modular housing for patients who are in need of isolation, which he hopes will be prepared by the end of the week.

"We believe that these are cases of community acquired transmission", Duchin said. She's now under self-isolation at home.

United States dollar pressured by expectations of Fed rate cut
Others argue that rate cuts could have a significant impact in part by preventing panic on Wall Street. But with the virus spreading, it threatens to have a broader impact, Mann said.

Stay away from people who are ill, especially if you are 60 and older or have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or a weakened immune system.

New cases of the virus were announced in Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington state, NY and Florida on Sunday, bringing the U.S. total to 89 as of Monday morning, up from 65 on Friday night.

World stock markets, after a week-long slide, on Monday regained a measure of calm amid hope of a possible stimulus, while USA stocks also opened higher. Like most people, they assumed it was the flu.

"We think that this has a pretty high rate of mild symptoms and can be asymptomatic".

"We can not make predictions as to how many cases we'll have, but we will have more, and we will have more community cases", he said on CBS' Face the Nation programme. There are now more than 80,000 cases worldwide and about 3,000 deaths.

The president, Azar said, "was trying to say everything's on the table". There has been a jump in presumed cases reported by the states to 27 from seven.

The White House will also hold more briefings to keep the public informed of the situation, said Mr Trump.
