Donald Trump tests negative for coronavirus, says White House physician

U.S. President Donald Trump has tested negative for COVID-19, his physician said, following concerns over his exposure to a disease that has paralysed the globe.

Trump "briefly came in contact" with Wajngarten, his physician Sean Conley wrote in a letter to White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham.

During his remarks Saturday, Trump said he had his temperature taken before entering into the press briefing room.

At a press conference on Friday, Trump claimed he was symptom-free and said that since the guidelines called for those who fell in that category to refrain from seeking a test, that is what he would do.

Questions about the president's health have swirled after several people who have been in contact with Trump have later tested positive for the coronavirus. "The press has been going insane".

Pence, who is heading the Coronavirus Task Force, said that he and his wife would be "more than happy to be tested". "Additionally, given the President himself remains without symptoms, testing for COVID-19 is not now indicated", Conley said in a statement.

The Brazilian Embassy in Washington said late Friday that the country's chargé d'affaires, Nestor Forster, tested positive after sitting at Trump's dinner table.

Also, so far, 3,043 people have been tested positive for the coronavirus across the country, according to worldometers.info.

Trump's personal physician confirmed the development on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence has announced the extension of the administration's European travel ban to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Trump had notably also been exposed to U.S. lawmakers and politicians who have since gone into self-quarantine, suspecting an infection.

According to the worldwide news agency, the United States has 2,700 confirmed cases of the virus whereas 54 died in the country.

"Out of an abundance of caution, temperature checks are now being performed on any individuals who are in close contact with the president and vice president", White House spokesperson Judd Deere said in a statement to reporters on Saturday.
