Alabama To Execute Nathaniel Woods Despite Increasing Calls For Reprieve

The Supreme Court's decision comes after Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced she had no plans to stop the execution.

Woods, 44, was convicted in 2005 for his role in the fatal shootings of three police officers in Birmingham, Alabama.

On June 17, 2004, Birmingham police officers Carlos Owen, Harley Chisholm III and Charles Bennett were shot to death while executing a misdemeanor assault warrant for Woods at a suspected crack house in Birmingham. The jury's 10-2 verdict for death would have spared Mr. Woods's life in most states because death verdicts are generally required to be unanimous, but not in Alabama.

Alabama death row inmate Nathaniel Woods, 43, was executed Thursday night by lethal injection at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The case garnered national attention and advocates for Woods, including Martin Luther King III, the son of the late civil rights leader, fought to block the execution, arguing that Spencer was exclusively responsible for the slayings. Meek tweeted. "As a black man how can you believe in the American justice system.that shit gotta change and if you are white and not a racist STEP UP because you guys have majority control over the system today!"

Simpson is among multiple groups and advocates, including Martin Luther King III and celebrity Kim Kardashian West, who have asked for a halt to the execution. "Whenever there's any inkling of a chance that somebody may be innocent, all of the facts will be exhausted", said King, who told Hemmer he heard of Woods' case while in Selma for the "Bloody Sunday" anniversary march last weekend.

Alongside a copy of the document, law student Kim - who has worked with prisoners on death row - wrote: "The court has lifted the temporary stay of execution for #NathanielWoods".

If they request their AV ballot the day before the election or on Election Day, they must vote the ballot in the clerk's office. It's no secret that, in general, Democrats support expanding the ease of voting while Republicans work to contract that right.

Both were executed despite the Supreme Court offering a slight chance for a reprieve when Justice Clarence Thomas signed the execution order stating that it would be delayed "pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court". A fourth officer also was shot but survived.

The condemned man did not make a final statement, she said. Join the broad coalition- including members of the jury and relatives of the victims - in urging Governor Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall to stay Nate's execution.

Even Woods' co-defendant, Kerry Spencer, who has confessed to being the triggerman and denies Woods was complicit, implored for his execution to be stopped.

State attorneys said that while Woods was awaiting trial, deputies found a drawing of a bullet-riddled police auto in his cell and song lyrics about killing such as, "Haven't you ever heard of a killa I drop pigs like Kerry Spencer".

Kardashian West later tweeted "RIP Nathaniel Woods".

"Why not take the time, give a reprieve or a stay, just to allow some time to look over this case properly?" "And I would like to quote Gov. Ivey's own words back when she signed the abortion ban a year ago - the human life protection act".

Hemmer challenged King as to how he knew Woods was innocent, adding there are many "ifs" in regard to critiques of the case.
