Hong Kong reports first coronavirus death as hospital workers escalate strike


The request comes one day after the Hong Kong flag carrier announced a 90% cut in mainland China flights due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China's appeal to the country's airlines was reported on Xinhua's account on Chinese messaging app Weibo.

Instead dozens of global carriers have reduced or suspended flights to China in a bid to halt the pathogen's spread and as passenger numbers fall off a cliff.

It started as a trickle, with the likes of United Airlines announcing it would cut back some China flights. "But I believe after we say all arrivals have to be quarantined for 14 days from February 8 the number of arrivals will reduce", Lam said.

The country's largest air carrier China Southern Airlines (China Southern), has sent flights to carry a total of 380 tonnes of medical supplies as of 6 p.m., February 2, according to the airline.
