Williams, Federer go to third round in Australian Open

China's Wang Qiang has sent 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams crashing out in the third round of the Australian Open with a stunning three-set triumph.

After fending off multiple attacks on her own serve, Wang claimed the first break, allowing her to take the first set, along with the attention of her doubters.

Williams broke after more than two and a half hours in the final and ended the game with a backhand on the net.

"I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today", said Williams afterwards. "After last time, I did really hard work on the court and off the court, it's really good work and I believed I could do it".

Wang, who previous year became the highest ranked Chinese player since two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na, said she had been working hard since the defeat at Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic barely got out of first gear in a sizzling performance to thrash Yoshihito Nishioka and move into the Australian Open fourth round Friday, closing in on a record eighth title.

Djokovic will next meet Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who beat Serb Dusan Lajovic 6-2 6-3 7-6 (7) earlier on Friday, an opponent the world number two termed as "one of the quickest players on Tour". Tommy Paul in a second round match that went to a tiebreaker in the fifth set.

Underdog Dellien was broken in the sixth game of the second set but hit back again to break Nadal for the second time in the match before the top seed again rallied to restore control with some sizzling forehands down the line.

Wozniacki's good friend Williams, however, will be left to ponder whether she will ever match Court's record Grand Slam haul after another opportunity slipped by.

Then 22-year-old Zidansek resorted to playing a percentage game with a series of smooth strokes, which resulted in rare errors creeping into her opponent's game.

The Tunisian sent former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki into retirement by beating the Dane 7-5 3-6 7-5. It's not about the tournament, it's just like I can't play like that.

Friday's encounter was a world away from their quarterfinal meeting at the U.S. Open a year ago, when it had taken Williams only 44 minutes to progress to the next round after a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing.
