His work on Thor: Ragnarok proved he can tackle the fantasy-sci-fi genre with aplomb, and making a Star Wars movie with that same comedic tone would certainly be a step in a new direction for the franchise as a whole.

According to industry magazine Variety, Waititi is in discussions with Disney about possible new movies for the popular franchise.

In holy-balls-this-is-awesome-news, Taika Waititi, the helmer of Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, is now in talks to direct a Star Wars movie after he's wrapped up Thor 4, according to THR.

Waititi is already a part of the Lucasfilm family, having directed the Season 1 finale of The Mandalorian as well as voicing the role of IG-11 on the Disney+ series.

"Oh, I don't know anything about that", Waititi replied.

Despite respect McGregor says he could beat Cerrone with the flu
You can soak up the entire build and full UFC 246 card before the McGregor and Cowboy showdown with many big names in the mix. The 31-year-old receives a guaranteed £ 3.8m purse for his battle with the veteran at UFC 246, according to the Daily Mail.

His stock is high in Hollywood, not least for the success of Jojo Rabbit which received six Oscar nominations this week, including best film.

"Obviously I would, but I'm going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season", he added.

But Waititi said he definitely would want to take the reins of a Star Wars movie.

SYFY WIRE has reached out to Disney for comment. The report states it's not clear whether Waititi could join the previously-announced Star Wars project from Marvel creative chief Kevin Feige (who Waititi developed Ragnarok with), or if he's developing his own take. He's also attached to direct a live-action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros. Although the original Skywalker is now done and dusted, a new Star Wars flick is slated to release on December 16, 2022, which isn't as far away as you'd hope.
