Jacksonville remembers MLK with march, day of service


Hundreds of Yakima community members gathered Monday afternoon to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Iowa City will continue to host events in honor of Dr. King throughout the rest of the week. "I feel like we're helping him out at this point", Jones said.

The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. After starting at the 16th Street Baptist Church, Dr. King and Abernathy were soon arrested and placed in solitary confinement, which is when King penned his famous text, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail".

When King was assassinated in 1968, Rep. John Conyers of MI introduced the first legislation to make a federal holiday in his honor - gaining nationwide support in the 1970s before it was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. MLK day is a day many find themselves off from work or school.
