Preeti Maheshwari, a teacher at an global school in Shenzhen, is being treated for Streptococcal infection, her husband Ashuman Khowal told PTI from Shenzhen.

Hospital authorities and police have warned people against speaking about the virus online or to the media, with eight people "dealt with" earlier this month after sharing information online. Mr Khowal, however, clarified that his wife case had been diagnosed as Streptococcal infection.

A 45-year-old Indian school teacher is undergoing treatment for a new strain of pneumonia that is spreading in the Chinese cities of Wuhan and Shenzhen.

The UK'S Medical Research Council (MRC) has said that there could be as many as 1,700 cases in Wuhan city, and expressed concern about the 19 million people served by Wuhan airport that could facilitate the spread of the virus. Nineteen of those individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while two men in their 60s - one with severe preexisting conditions - have died from the illness.

Other countries, including Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan, have also announced measures to strengthen entry detection measures as the Lunar New Year approaches: peak migration season when large numbers of Chinese travelers are going to travel across Asia.

Typically, a border services officer, designated as a screening officer under the Quarantine Act, is the first point of contact and they will conduct a preliminary screening of the traveler based on criteria - such as fever or signs of fever, coughing, difficulty breathing, rash and other symptoms - developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Mode of transmission is unclear as of now.

This "does not rule out the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission, but the risk of continuous human-to-human transmission is low", Li said.

Following a second death due to the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan, India on Friday issued an advisory to its nationals travelling to China.

The Wuhan Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, believed to be the epicentre of the outbreak, has been closed for disinfection since Jan 1 but, in a bid to arrest the spread of the virus, the authorities have been cleaning up markets across the city. The absolute worst-case scenario would be that this new virus has found a way to make the jump from person-to-person, though health officials are not yet able to determine if that's the case.
