Trump impeachment: Democrats introduce two formal charges

Democrats said they will recommend to the entire House of Representatives later in the week that the president be impeached, after a judiciary committee vote that is expected to fall along partisan lines. No Republicans appear likely to vote to impeach the President after an investigation congressional Republicans denounced as unfair and biased against the President.

The move makes Mr. Trump only the fourth president to face impeachment.

Nadler, flanked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and fellow chairs of the committees that investigated whether Trump should be impeached, said his committee would take up the articles later this week, the next step in a process that could ultimately lead to Trump being removed from office.

Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee punctuated their calls for having Rep. Adam Schiff testify by putting his photo on an image of a milk carton and displaying it in the hearing room.

The introduction of articles of impeachment comes after a two-month investigation into Ukraine that was sparked by an anonymous whistleblower complaint alleging Trump solicited election help from Ukraine on a July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. "The danger to our democracy is clear, and our duty is clear", Nadler said in his closing statement at the last scheduled House impeachment hearing. Centrist Democrats preferred to keep the impeachment articles more focused on Trump's actions toward Ukraine.

Republicans repeatedly called the process a "sham", and dismissed the impeachment effort as a predetermined outcome that started shortly after Trump took office.

In the case of Richard Nixon, the House judiciary committee drafted articles of impeachment but Mr. Nixon resigned before they could be voted on by the full House.

In the report, congressional investigators said Trump "personally and acting through agents within and outside of the USA government, solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, to benefit his re-election".

"We voted for Donald Trump, and so they're merely eradicating him as a result of they don't like him", the protester shouted. Approval of the charges would send them to the Senate in January, where the Republican majority would be unlikely to convict Trump.

Nadler said in the press conference that Trump is being accused of "committing high crimes and misdemeanors" including "abuse of power".

Trump is also criticizing the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation following the release of the Justice Department's inspector general's report examining the FBI's investigation of Trump's 2016 election campaign.
