Riot Games Pays $10 Million Settlement Over Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

The League of Legends developer will be paying every female employee that has worked under then in the last five years.

A very popular video game company settled a class action sexual discrimination lawsuit from hundreds of current and former female employees by agreeing to pay them $10 million. They could not show any details at that time, but this time it seems the matter has come to light. The plaintiffs and Riot Games have agreed to this decision, but the court will have the final say. Rosen Saba has represented the plaintiffs since the class-action lawsuit was filed on November 5, 2018.

As Jay Castello highlighted when reporting on Riot's agreement to settle, "chief operating officer Scott Gelb, who was suspended without pay for two months late a year ago after an internal investigation into alleged behaviour including genital touching and farting on colleagues' faces, seemingly remains with the company".

Onur Tamer, METAI general manager at Riot Games, said: "We opened our offices in the region over a year ago".

Riot Games were accused of an internal culture that promoted severe misconduct in the workplace as well as gender discrimination. Full-time executives are likewise getting more cash than contractual workers. Recently, there have been lawsuits alleging discrimination and sexism, which Riot has moved to block due to a waiver found in most employee contracts. "The agreement is another important step forward and demonstrates our commitment to live up to our values and make Riot an inclusive environment for the best talent in the industry".

It's estimated that the company made $1.4 billion (roughly £1.1 billion) in 2018.

This follows from the reaction by Rioters Against Forced Arbitration, who organised to protest the issue, who said in August that "Settling this class action is a victory for women in games". The employee numbers are usually representing the company's worldwide workforce and the case is related to the LA headquarters.
