House Republicans defend Trump's actions in new report responding to impeachment inquiry

President Donald Trump slammed House Judiciary Committee on Monday for holding its first impeachment hearing while he is scheduled to depart the US for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders meeting in Europe.

President Donald Trump's re-election campaign said Monday that it would no longer credential reporters from Bloomberg News to attend campaign events after the publication announced that it would not investigate its boss, Michael Bloomberg, or his rivals for the 2020 Democratic nomination.

Politico reported if Nadler follows the model of former President Bill Clinton's impeachment, the second set of hearings would see Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff and others presenting their findings to the Judiciary Committee.

He also accused the Judiciary Committee of deliberately asking the President to be present at the hearings when he is scheduled to participate in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in London at the time.

"Today, by contrast, you have afforded the president no scheduling input, no meaningful information, and so little time to prepare that you have effectively denied the Administration a fair opportunity to participate", Cipollone notes.

Under the House-passed rules, the President's counsel is able to participate in the impeachment hearings in the Judiciary Committee, unlike the public hearings last month in the House Intelligence Committee.

Nadler's panel is slated to hold a hearing on Wednesday titled "The Impeachment Inquiry into President Donald J. Trump: Constitutional Grounds for Presidential Impeachment".

Also at issue is the holdup of $400 million in congressionally appropriated military aid to Ukraine and whether Trump conditioned the release of that assistance and a possible Oval Office meeting with Zelensky on the Ukrainian president publicly announcing the investigations.

However, he said, the business-focused news organisation would continue "to investigate the Trump administration, the government of the day".

If Trump is impeached, he will be only the third such president in American history.

Cipollone's letter comes less than a week after Nadler formally invited Trump and his attorneys to attend and participate in the December 4 hearing.

President Trump departed Washington D.C. Monday to a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation gathering in London and before he left he criticized House Democrats for moving forward with impeachment proceedings.

Cipollone also noted that the initial hearing into the president's impeachment will include "no fact witnesses" at all.

"Before every part, the first one that needs to testify is Adam Schiff", Collins of Georgia "stated on Fox News Sunday".

Fiona Hill, former National Security Council Russia expert, center right, and David Holmes, counselor for political affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, center left, testify during a House Intelligence Committee impeachment inquiry hearing on Capitol Hill November 21, 2019 in Washington, DC.

Schiff hasn't commented on whether he would refuse to testify if called to do so, but said Republicans would show a "fundamental lack of seriousness" if they subpoenaed him. "I hope that he chooses to participate in the inquiry, directly or through counsel, as other Presidents have done before him", Nadler said.

Polls on presidential support has fluctuated in recent weeks since the Democrats launched their probe into Mr Trump. Unless political dynamics change, Trump is expected to have the backing of majority Republicans in that chamber to be acquitted. "I really think you can handle your own newsroom of immensely talented editors and reporters covering you the same way they do everything else".
