63-car pileup shuts down Interstate 64 in Virginia

Michelle Anaya said in a statement that the accident happened at about 7:51 a.m. Sunday and had shut down traffic in both directions on Interstate 64.

According to the Virginia State Police, 35 people were taken to the hospital, with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.

At the time of the crash, police said ice was present on the Queens Creek Bridge and heavy fog covered the area.

Detours are in place due to the crash.

Both lanes were closed before authorities could open the eastbound lanes on Sunday morning.

"My thoughts are with all involved in the multi-vehicle accident near Williamsburg this morning".

He went on to say that he saw people attempting to exit their cars to try and stop more vehicles from driving down the road into the wreckage.

There have been no reports of fatalities.

Peter Glagola, spokesman for Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, said physicians there were treating 24 patients.

Police said that the fog, combined with icy conditions, would have been factors.

The Sheriff's Office said 45 vehicles had crashed, while the Virginia State Police pegged the total at 35. He said another 11 victims were being treated for serious injuries.

"Next thing I know I see cars just start piling up on top of each other", he told the outlet. However he got a call from his wife, Alena, who said she was stuck in the wreck.

This weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year, as people hit the roads for the upcoming Christmas holidays. AAA estimated more Americans than ever - 115.6 million - will travel this holiday season, from December 21 through January 1.
