Israel said its aircraft struck dozens of Iranian and Syrian military targets in Syria on Wednesday in retaliation for rockets fired towards Israel a day earlier.

The Syrian official news agency SANA reported Wednesday morning that "Air Defense Systems in the Syrian Arab army thwarted, after midnight, a violent Israeli aggression that targeted the outskirts of Damascus and destroyed most of the missiles before they reached their targets while two civilians were martyred and two were injured due to the aggression". That attack killed three people, Syrian opposition activists said.

The attack by the Israeli Air Force was carried out less than 24 hours after the IDF and Syrian military traded rocket attacks along the border of the occupied Golan Heights.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a statement after the attack, saying: "I made it clear that whoever hurts us - we will hurt him".

Israel sometimes launches attacks on Syria from planes flying over neighboring Lebanon. The targets included surface-to-air missiles, headquarters, weapons depots, and military bases, Israel's military spokesperson Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee said on Twitter.

The Israeli military said it intercepted four incoming rockets from Syria on Tuesday and explosions were heard shortly after that in Damascus, a week after another Israeli strike targeted a top Palestinian militant in the Syrian capital.

The military said it also struck positions of the Syrian army after a Syrian air defense missile was sacked. Last week, Israel killed a senior commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an Iran-backed group in the Gaza Strip, setting off two days of heavy fighting.

Al-Ajouri was not killed in the attack, although his son and another died.
