Authorities reported that heavy rains in the area are hampering rescue efforts, and details remain unclear.

Numerous smaller quakes, mostly below 2.0-magnitude, also have shaken the area north of Ventura, the agency says.

The tremor hit the northwestern Iranian province at a shallow depth of about 10km early on Friday morning, local time, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) put the location as 112 kilometers southeast of the major city of Tabriz.

More recently, in 2017, a magnitude 7 natural disaster hit the Iran-Iraq border region, killing 600 people and injuring more than 9,000.

The incident was followed by more than 60 aftershocks, causing people to stay outdoors in the middle of night.
