The Exynos 990 also teases one potential new feature of the upcoming Galaxy S11 and Note 11 phones, and that's a display with a high refresh rate. Samsung won't be just using this for themselves, though, as they are selling this chip for other companies as well such as Motorola and vivo. The chip can also support refresh rates up to 120 Hz suggesting S11 users can look forward to up to a doubling of current display refresh rates on Samsung devices.

The Exynos 990's tri-cluster design is powered by two Cortex-A76 cores for performance and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores for a 20-percent gain in overall performance.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced at its Samsung Tech Day 2019 two silicon products specifically tailored for future mobile devices that will make intensive use of video and artificial intelligence (AI) applications as well as 5G communications. Contrary to rumors suggesting Samsung was going to drop its custom cores, the Exynos 990 features two bespoke next-gen M5 cores based on ARM's new Cortex A77 design. The latest of which is the Exynos 990 which is an obvious follow-up to the Exynos 980.

As well as being manufactured using a refined process, the Exynos 990 is notable for another advance - in graphics power. The CPU is coupled with a dual-core neural processing unit, a digital signal processor with 10 TOPs and a Mali-G77 MP11 GPU that incorporates Valhall architecture. The processor can also handle 108MP images, which makes sense given that Samsung has announced a 108MP camera sensor. We can expect it to launch in the year 2020.

The 5G modem features support for both sub-6GHz and millimetre-wave frequencies. With up to 8-carrier aggregation over 5G, the modem delivers a maximum downlink speed of up to 5.1 Gbps in sub-6-GHz and 7.35 Gbps in mmWave, or up to 3.0 Gbps in 4G networks with 1024 QAM.

Apart from the SoC, Samsung also unveiled Exynos 5123 5G modem which will be used in its 5G phones starting next year. As far as camera is concerned the Exynos 990 will be able to support cameras up to 108 Megapixels of resolution and dual 24.8 Megapixels camera, the video recording capability of this is also enhanced to 8K video with 30fps or 4K video with 120fps along with encoding and decoding with 10-bit HEVC (H.265), H, 264 and VP9 formats.
