New England Patriots re-sign tight end Ben Watson

Watson was suspended the first four games of the season after he violated the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, which is why it wasn't until October 7 that he was cut. He's eligible to begin practicing immediately after the Browns game, and could return to the Patriots' starting lineup for their Week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles if his turf toe injury allows it.

Watson isn't a one-for-one swap with Johnson or Develin, but perhaps he will provide the Patriots some relief as they figure out what to do without a fullback in 2019 - if that's the route they stick with.

Watson, 38, was in camp with the Patriots but did not play in a game and was released last week after serving a four-game suspension because of a violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing drugs policy.

Watson will try to both start and end his career with a Super Bowl victory. Ryan Izzo would move back into a secondary role as the team's No. 2 tight end option, and LaCosse could finally be afforded the time he needs to get his knee and ankle injuries fully healed.

"I know he was looking forward to playing". New England released him last week. Brady likes working with Watson, who knows the system in his second stint with the team.
