China and Nepal hailed the "beginning of a new era" in relations Sunday as President Xi Jinping ended his visit with promises of a railway and tunnel connecting the two countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in India on Friday for a two-day visit to take part in the 2nd informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A stable, open and prosperous China will always be a development opportunity for Nepal and the rest of the world, the Chinese leader added.

During discussions, speakers said that Nepal should take independent decision on economic cooperation with China amid western country's warning about what they claimed "debt trap" from China.

During their Mamallapuram summit, Modi and Xi will also discuss the longstanding boundary issue between India and China.

Last month Indian and Chinese troops engaged in what Indian media called a "scuffle" in Ladakh on the banks of the Pangong Tso lake, two-thirds of which is controlled by China, and where soldiers threw stones at each other in August 2017. With Pakistan too strongly objecting to the Indian move, and Beijing backing its all-weather friend Islamabad at the United Nations recently, Pakistan is the proverbial elephant in the room when it comes to Sino-Indian ties.

In a statement during the state banquet in honour of Xi, President Bhandari said there are enormous possibilities of taking forward the warm and friendly relations between Nepal and China.

THE high-level visit to China by the top political and military leadership of Pakistan has yielded some positive movement in this country's attempts to draw worldwide attention to the atrocities being perpetrated by New Delhi in India-held Kashmir. China was upset over the Indian Army holding exercises in Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing regards as part of its territory.
