SC GOPer Announces Run Against Trump After SC Cancels Primary

He joins former MA governor Bill Weld, who launched a bid against Trump in April seeking to appeal to traditional Republican voters, and former IL congressman Joe Walsh, who announced last month that he will challenge the president not from the center but from the right and on moral grounds.

Silencing those disloyal to the president amounts to an abdication of "our responsibility to help create a 'more flawless union, '" Fiorina said, insisting that Trump must earn loyalty from Americans - not coerce it.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope a win in the traditionally Republican suburbs here will not only help protect their majority, but energize the party heading into next year's presidential election.

Republicans in South Carolina, Arizona, Kansas and Nevada have already decided not to hold Republican primaries in 2020, opting instead to automatically declare President Donald Trump the victor of the states' delegates. A decision in Arizona is expected later in the month. "As far as I'm concerned, they're dead", Trump said.

"A vote for any Democrat in 2020 and a vote for any Democrat tomorrow in North Carolina is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American dream", Trump said. "With no legitimate primary challenger and President Trump's record of results, the decision was made to save SC taxpayers over $1.2 million and forgo an unnecessary primary". Even their boosters admit that it's not likely. Meanwhile, some states are just doing away with the Republican primaries. Collectively, Trump took to Twitter on Monday to brand his trio of challengers "The Three Stooges, all badly failed candidates".

It's not clear where Trump got that figure from. But they point to history - the precedent of Ford and Carter and George H.W. Bush.

A Republican victory would help the party launch a comeback effort to wrest the House of Representatives away from Democrats after losing 40 seats and overall control in House elections a year ago. And Weld knows that. Even Trump's detractors acknowledge his sway inside the GOP, especially in states where he installed hand-picked allies for state party chairs.

Weld ran for vice president on the third-party Libertarian line in 2016, along with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. He is fiscally conservative and more moderate on social issues than most Republicans, favoring abortion rights and marijuana legalization. Lyndon Johnson withdrew from the 1968 race - in which only 14 states and the District of Columbia had scheduled Democratic nominating contests at all - after nearly losing New Hampshire to Eugene McCarthy.

But given the steep odds against him, hurting Trump's re-election chances would be an alternate outcome. The president has secured a strong grip on state GOP organizations across the country over the past three years.

Mr Trump described Mr Sanford's mistress as his "flaming dancer friend". But she doesn't appear to lean Republican either. Weld's campaign argues this could have unintended consequences that benefit the former governor. "It's vitally important to have an honest conversation about what it means to be a Republican in the era of Trump; our debate will be a valuable part of that discussion".

If he had not chose to run for president, Mr Sanford had said he might start a think tank devoted to fiscal conservatism. "Let's see how he does".

But the current front-runner is Joe Biden, the former vice president in Barack Obama's administration.

"Am I flawed candidate?" Trump stressed, however, that "I'm not running". His name is Mark Sanford. Appalachian Trail, ' he's the Appalachian Trail, right? His political revival was cut short when, as a congressman, he tangled with Trump and then lost in a primary.

Republican Dan Bishop, a 55-year-old state senator who has embraced Trump's policies and some of his political tactics, is facing 36-year-old Democrat Dan McCready, a small-businessman and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, in Tuesday's race.

In a show of support for Trump, Republican leaders in several states have expressed they would consider canceling their 2020 presidential primaries.

The exception: 1992, the year Buchanan challenged Bush.

President Donald Trump touched down in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Monday in an all-out push for a Republican victory in a tight special election race. And again, the party chairman insists this isn't about protecting Trump.

William (Bill) Weld is an American attorney, businessman, and Republican politician who served as the 68th Governor of MA from 1991 to 1997. "And the challenges, we should say, aren't the problem".
