"Hurricane Hunter plane find Dorian is now a major hurricane".

As Hurricane Dorian appears to shift closer to South Florida for a potential Tuesday morning landfall, Gov. Ron DeSantis warned Floridians that they still have time - though it is decreasing - to prepare for what is expected to be Florida's first major hurricane of the season.

Miami:Hurricane Dorian strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" storm on Friday as it bore down on the Bahamas and the east coast of the U.S. state of Florida.

The governor had previously declared a state of emergency for all 67 Florida counties.

Earlier this week, police in Hollywood, Florida, charged four nursing home caregivers with causing the deaths of 12 patients who died in the sweltering heat of a post-hurricane power outage left by Hurricane Irma two years ago.

With Hurricane Dorian heading toward Florida's East Coast, Florida Power and Light has activated its emergency response plan.

Florida residents like Jamison Weeks, general manager at Conchy Joe's Seafood in Port St. Lucie, planned on staying put. "We've just got to be prepared for all those circumstances".

The NHC says "life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds" are possible in the northwestern Bahamas. "Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves", the NHC said.

Hurricane Dorian is now at latitude 24.8N and longitude 70.3W which is about 445 miles (715 km) east of the northwestern Bahamas and about 625 miles (1005 km) east of West Palm Beach, FL.

Meteorologists said Dorian could make landfall in Florida on Tuesday as a category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 140mph.

The storm's winds rose to a howling 130 mph (215 kph) and then, hours later, to a howling 140 mph (225 kph) as Dorian gained new strength while crossing warm Atlantic waters. Its winds had increased slightly to 110 miles per hour (175 kph) and the storm was moving northwest at 12 miles per hour (19 kph).

At 11 a.m. EDT on Friday, Dorian was located 480 miles (770 kilometers) east of the northwest Bahamas and about 660 miles (1,060 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach in Florida. While landfall is possible along the East Coast from Florida to the Carolinas, many models project it staying just off Florida's coast Tuesday, then skirting the coasts of Georgia and North and SC, with any landfall yet uncertain.

Dorian is centered about 255 miles (410 kilometers) east-northeast of the southeastern Bahamas and is moving northwest near 12 mph (19 kph).

There is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surges along portions of Florida's east coast late this weekend or early next week, the NHC said.

"There are no refiners in Florida, there's only a pipeline, and I can't imagine that would be affected significantly". And there were fears it could prove to be the most powerful hurricane to hit Florida's east coast in almost 30 years.

Colonial Pipeline, which delivers fuels such as gasoline and diesel from the Gulf Coast to markets across the southern and eastern United States, said it was operating normally.
