As Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida, Jewish agencies prepare to help

Wind gusts of more than 200 miles per hour and a storm surge of between 18 and 23 feet above the normal tide levels characterized this severely destructive and slow-moving storm.

As the storm reached Category 5 status and pummeled the Bahamas, Trump tweeted updates along with his usual weekend repertoire of Fox News quotes and attacks on the media. Also in September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the United States territory of Puerto Rico and Trump visited during the initial relief effort.

Trump hit the links over the long holiday weekend after canceling a trip to Poland to oversee the federal government's disaster response to the storm. That means the same place gets pounded over and over for hours on end.

The storm destroyed homes, leaving swarms of people homeless. This is despite a surface front that is expected to move through Wednesday night.

Reports of the storm's devastation in the Abacos have continued to trickle in with much of the island still without cell phone service and no power.

Ingrid McIntosh told Eyewitness News she believes her 8-year-old grandson drowned in the rising waters. Already category 5. BE CAREFUL! "Thus far, the Royal Bahamas Police Force has confirmed that there are five deaths in Abaco", Prime Minister Hubert Minnis told a news conference at the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Monday.

"Storm surge is definitely going to be a major factor".

Hurricane Dorian forecast to become Category 3 storm today
Its winds had increased slightly to 110 miles per hour (175 kph) and the storm was moving northwest at 12 miles per hour (19 kph). With Hurricane Dorian heading toward Florida's East Coast, Florida Power and Light has activated its emergency response plan.

Henfield said about 1,000 people were being sheltered in the government complex and the community was now in "search and recovery" mode, trying to negotiate its way around the island.

The National Hurricane Center has Dorian moving away from the Bahamas today and slowly moving north parallel to the Florida coastline over the next couple of days. Residents in these areas should continue to monitor the progress of Dorian and listen to advice given by local emergency officials.

American Airlines AAL.O said operations had been suspended at seven airports in Florida and the Bahamas, and a travel alert issued for more than 20 airports including in Georgia, North Carolina and SC.

A hurricane watch was in effect for Florida's East Coast from Deerfield Beach north to South Santee River in SC.

Trump made headlines Sunday when he said he's not sure he "ever even heard of a Category 5" hurricane, despite three such storms prior to Hurricane Dorian having threatened the country since he took office.

The hurricane center said "life-threatening storm surges and unsafe hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida east coast through mid-week".
