NY sees doubling of severe lung illness cases linked to vaping


Health officials said it is still unclear whether there's a connection between cases among different states, whether vaping definitively caused these illnesses, and what components or chemicals of e-cigarettes might be responsible.

He added that officials from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had arrived in IL on Tuesday to help investigate the death, as well as 22 cases of vaping-related lung illnesses in the state. IDPH is also working with local health departments to investigate another 12 cases.

The number of reported cases of people who used e-cigarettes or vaped and have been hospitalized with respiratory problems has doubled in the past week to 22, the department said.

More than 150 cases have been reported in 15 states, primarily among teens and young adults, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms worsened over a period of days or weeks before they were hospitalized. "Health care providers caring for patients with unexpected serious respiratory illness should ask about a history of vaping or e-cigarette use".

TDH issued a public health advisory on the risks posed by vaping, juuling and use of other electronic nicotine delivery products in December and continues to urge caution to Tennesseans of all ages who use or are considering the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems.

CDC officials cautioned investigators have not identified the cause, and have not identified a specific product or compound that is linked to all cases.

Other symptoms reported by patients include fever, abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and diarrhea.
