Son finds dead baby in mother's freezer after she dies of cancer

Adam Smith, 37, had been living with his mother inside her St. Louis apartment to care for her before she died of cancer.

A Missouri man has been left reeling after learning his late mother left behind a horrifying secret: she'd seemingly been storing a dead baby in the family's freezer for almost 40 years.

Smith made the discovery when he opened a box Sunday that his mom had kept in her freezer for decades.

"I'm assuming it is my sister", says 37-year-old Smith, who recalls his mother mentioning her "oldest child" named Jennifer, who passed away before Smith and his 45-year-old sister were born.

His curiosity took over.

Smith told officers that as unusual as it sounds, he never looked inside the wrapped box because he assumed it was frozen wedding cake. But what he saw was the last thing he was expecting.

"There was a pink blanket, baby blanket, and when I reached down and touched it I could feel a foot", Smith told CNN.

Smith says he remembers his mom once talking about losing a child at birth and believes the remains are that of his sister from 46 or 47 years ago. "I freaked out ... and called police right away". He was also told by a relative that she gave birth to twins, one of whom she gave up for adoption and one of whom died. He said it had reportedly been there for more than three decades.

"Who absolutely keeps their own child in a box for this long and never talks about it?"

"Finding this, I'm more confused, angry, and I just want to find closure", he told KSDK.

Police said this is still an active investigation.

Joining Smith in his quest for information are detectives from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the Post-Dispatch reported, noting that the case is being investigated as a "suspicious death".

He told KTVI he's distraught over the possibility of what his mother may have done and has so many questions. That's what makes me think maybe she did something to this baby and didn't want to tell anyone because she was afraid she would get in trouble'.
