Israeli dozen remanded in gang rape case


A group of 12 Israelis traveling in Cyprus were arrested on suspicion of gang raping a 19-year-old woman, according to Napa police reports released on Wednesday, Cyprus Mail reports.

The youths, aged between 16 and 18, are alleged to have raped the woman in a hotel room in Ayia Napa, a resort on the southeastern coast popular with holidaymakers.

The Foreign Office has said it is supporting a woman who was assaulted and says it is in contact with local police. Medical examiners said they found bruises and scratches on her.

Police in Ayia Napa and neighboring Paralimni detained the Israelis at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Reports claimed three of the 12 allegedly raped the woman while the rest denied involvement.

The hearing was held behind closed doors because one of the suspects is underage.

The group pulled t-shirts over their faces as they travelled to and from the court.

Addressing reporters, the four women - known as The Squad - all said the focus should be on policy and not the president's words . Pelosi announced late Monday night that the House will debate the resolution Tuesday afternoon and the vote will occur at 7 p.m.

The Times of Israel said some of the men involved in the alleged attack were minors, and that the alleged victim was 19. She said he called her in "tears" stating that he had "nothing to do" with the allegations.

As some reports suggest, the alleged rape caused a stir at the resort.

"I think it's a trick", he said.

Yaslovitzh told Israeli TV Channel 12 that two of the suspects admit to engaging in sexual acts with the woman and that it was consensual.

Defense Lawyer Yaniv Habari told the Israeli Haaretz newspaper that he met with his clients and "they're in a good mood".

They also said that the Cypriot police had allowed Israeli diplomats access to the suspects.

The town of Ayia Napa is a resort popular with younger tourists due to its lively nightlife.
