Judge Richard M. Berman said he'll rule Thursday whether Epstein can be freed with a strict bail package, but he noted at the outset of two-hour hearing there was a presumption in cases involving sexual abuse of children that a defendant will remain locked up. The document, issued in the 1980s, reportedly places the subject's residence in Saudi Arabia.
Prosecutors say Epstein's wealth makes him a risk to flee the country or to tamper with the investigation, so he should be detained.

If granted bail, Epstein would be "a scary person to have walking the streets", Wild said. Prosecutors said some of the images appeared to be of underage girls.
In a written submission Friday to U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, prosecutors shared new information about their investigation and why they perceive Epstein as unsafe.
Epstein was charged last week in NY with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.
Epstein, a longtime associate of Wexner's, is accused of running a sex-trafficking enterprise, in which he paid girls as young as 14 to have sex with him at his Upper East Side home and his estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Whether Epstein is a billionaire, as he has been routinely described, is hard to know.

The person with the confirmed case is a pastor who had been in the town of Butembo, said the press release by the health ministry. That raised fears Ebola could accelerate into one of Africa's most densely populated areas and over the Rwanda border.
Rossmiller said authorities had received information from a "financial establishment" about an account that contained US$110 million.
Epstein's has a net worth of about $560 million, according to an asset summary dated June 30, one week prior to his July 6 arrest.
Epstein, 66, has pleaded not guilty and is being held behind bars at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a fortress-like jail in lower Manhattan.
In addition to the charges in the indictment, prosecutors are also reviewing dozens of electronic files seized during the raid on Epstein's NY residence, finding even more photos than the trove of pictures of nude and semi-nude young women and girls they had reported prior to a court hearing a week ago. Those victims were also not notified of the plea deal Epstein received, a breach of federal law.
Lawyers for Epstein said their client has had an unblemished record after pleading guilty over a decade ago to a state prostitution charge in Florida and registering as a sex offender, Reuters reported. "His wealth and privilege would often make it more hard".
That plea deal was overseen by the then-U.S. attorney in Miami, Alexander Acosta, who resigned as the Trump administration labor secretary on Friday amid growing criticism surrounding the way he handled the agreement, according to the AP.
