Britain's USA ambassador resigns after calling Trump 'clumsy and inept'

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who is standing against Boris Johnson for the leadership of the Conservative party, tweeted Wednesday that he "profoundly" regretted how an "outrageous leak" had caused Darroch's resignation.

If Darroch had ever had any doubt about the accuracy of his own missives, watching the United States president sink the UK and U.S. into something approaching a full diplomatic crisis over a few leaked words suggesting he was insecure must have served up a mote of vindication in an otherwise awful week.

As a spat between the two close allies intensified, Trump said he would sever ties with the "very stupid" Darroch and called May "foolish".

Ambassador Darroch presented his resignation after Trump dialed up his criticism of the diplomat on Tuesday, calling him "wacky" and "a extremely insensible man".

"The right decision, time (to) put in a non-Remainer who wants a trade deal with America", Farrage tweeted. "The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like".

"On behalf of the Diplomatic Service, I accept your resignation with deep personal regret". He praised Darroch for behaving "as you always behaved over a long and distinguished career, with dignity, professionalism and class" and lamented how he'd been "the target of a malicious leak" when "simply doing your job".

It seems the deliberate leaking of Kim Darroch's email was aimed at undermining him, so the new unelected Tory PM can appoint a Trumpian patsy to Washington.

In a letter to the head of the Foreign Office, Sir Simon McDonald, Sir Kim said the current situation had made it "impossible" for him to carry out his job.

"I think whoever leaked his diptels [diplomatic telegrams] really has done a grave disservice to our civil servants, to people who give impartial advice to ministers", he said. A day beforeDarroch's resignation Downing Street said he 'continues to have the primeminister's full support, adding that 'we have made clear to the USA howunfortunate this leak is and that 'the selective extracts leaked do notreflect the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship.

It is one of the low points in a U.S. - British relationship that has undergone numerous stresses since Redcoats torched the White House and the U.S. Capitol building in 1814. "Johnson's failure to back the British Ambassador in Washington makes him vulnerable to accusations of being weak towards Trump", Ford said on Wednesday.

Speaking on the BBC's Newsnight programme, Mr Raab, who is backing Mr Johnson in the Conservative leadership contest, labelled Sir Kim's comments as "wrong" and claimed diplomatic cables should not include personalised remarks. The first is Sir Kim Darroch and his team at the UK's embassy in the USA.

Darroch leaves his position after three years as ambassador to the U.S. He has served as a British diplomat for almost three decades.

Needless to say, though, the formal, polite public response elicited yet another tirade from Trump. "The whole cabinet rightly gave its full support to Sir Kim on Tuesday".

US President Donald Trump has his own style but never loses when someone criticises him.

Darroch, by contrast, served as the U.K.'s representative to the European Union from 2004 and 2007 and is widely seen as a europhile. But a spokesperson for the State Department said that "the United States and the United Kingdom share a bond that is bigger than any individual, and we look forward to continuing that partnership".
