Found no objection to list Azhar after studying revised materials: China

In a major diplomatic victory for India, Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar has finally been listed as an worldwide terrorist by the United Nation Security Council's (UNSC) 1267 committee.

The US welcomed the listing of Azhar and sought "sustained actions" from Pakistan against terrorism, consistent with its worldwide obligations.

The JeM chief's listing means that, according to the sanction measures put out by the UNSC, it can freeze his assets, impose a travel ban and put an arms embargo. Masood Azhar's Jaish-e-Mohammed had taken the responsibility for the attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama which claimed the lives of 40 security personnel in February this year.

The development also angered the USA and its allies, which circulated a draft resolution on listing Azhar among the UN Security Council's members to force China's hand.

After the Pulwama attack, not only did India ensure terror camps in Pakistan were targeted in surgical air-strikes, but also that the world community took cognisance of India's concern of Pakistan-based terror organisations launching terror attacks in India.

"We commend the Pakistani government's and people's efforts in fighting terrorism and extremism and their great endeavours and sacrifices to this end", he said, lauding Pakistan's counter terrorism efforts.

Azhar's JeM is responsible for Parliament, 2016 Pathankot and 2019 Pulwama attacks.

India has been trying to list Azhar as a global terrorist for almost a decade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the decision, asserting that in India's fight against terrorism, it is a big victory.

But the attack in Pulwama was targeted against India security forces.

"We expect all countries to uphold these obligations", a spokesperson for the US Mission in United Nations told PTI, noting that the JeM is a UN-designated terrorist group, and Azhar, as the founder and leader of JeM, clearly met the criteria for designation by the world body.

Though China can exercise its veto as a permanent member of the UNSC, Beijing has staunchly opposed taking the issue to the United Nations body as it has to publicly explain its stand on Masood Azhar.

"I can only say that I believe that this will be properly resolved", Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told a media briefing in Beijing.

Indian Twitterati went into overdrive soon after JeM top leader was blacklisted by UNSC sanctions committee with Pakistan and China both dropping their objections to the latest proposal put forward by the US, UK and France to designate him as a terrorist. Any decision to add individuals or groups to the United Nations terror list is taken by consensus in the committee. China said it will continue to "engage in the discussion" and "review of this issue in a constructive manner". Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list.

"After 10 years, China has done the right thing", a U.S. administration official said. The proposal was moved the USA, the UK, France and co-sponsored by Australia, Bangladesh, Italy and Japan. During his visit, he met Chinese officials including Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, under whose rule the application against Masood Azhar was first moved in the United Nations, offered only a few words of satisfaction.
