Disney Plus: new streaming service launched with Marvel and Star Wars spin-offs

Disney is flexing pretty hard right now with all of these announcements and it's going to be insane when they finally release their streaming service later this year.

One concern for Netflix subscribers is that with more companies looking to offer their own standalone streaming services, there will be fewer opportunities to license top-shelf movies and TV shows.

Disney+ will also be home to Marvel's films, with Captain Marvel will be available from day one, along with films such as Iron Man, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. There's no official release date, but it's expected within a year of the Disney+ launch on November 12. The new Disney+ app will "in all likelihood be available through traditional app distributors, Apple being one of them", Iger told Bloomberg. As it stands, some of Hulu's original series are already on Canadian streaming services, such as the filmed-in-Toronto The Handmaid's Tale, which is available on Bell's Crave platform. In its first year, Disney+ will launch more than 10 original movies and 25 original series and offer a library of 7,500 episodes of television as well as over 500 film titles, including recent and classic movies. An entire creative team at Marvel Studios is dedicated to growing these Disney+ original titles, which Feige revealed more details about in his presentation.

Disney's plans for a rival to Netflix have been public knowledge for some time. The service will be ad-free, supported exclusively by subscription fees, and will be available on gaming consoles, smart TV's, and connected streaming devices.

On the Star Wars front, fans can expect a live-action show called The Mandalorian alongside a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

What If is happening: As reported last month, Marvel is adding an animated series, What If, based on the comics of the same name to the Disney+ series.

Nissan's Ghosn removed from board
Shareholders also approved the appointment of French partner Renault SA's chairman Jean-Dominique Senard to replace Ghosn. The vote severs the company's ties with Mr Ghosn, who was credited with saving it from bankruptcy two decades ago.

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany will reprise their roles as Wanda Maximoff and The Vision in a series titled WandaVision. Feige additionally mentioned Disney+ will have two unscripted series from behind-the-scenes material collected during the making of the Marvel live-action movies.

"The linchpin of Disney's streaming strategy, Disney+ will be an ad-free subscription service anchored by programming based on Disney's biggest franchises, including "Star Wars" and Marvel Studios, as well as original programming", The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Disney+ will also include movies from Fox including The Sound of Music and Fox shows like Malcolm in the Middle.

The irreverent TV family family was the marquee Fox addition to the inaugural Disney+ lineup unveiled today, which was dominated by Disney programs.

Kathleen Kennedy said that all of the now available Star Wars movies will arrive on the service, with future titles to be included as well.
