A Fordham University student who climbed the campus' landmark bell tower Sunday to snap photos of the New York City skyline suffered critical injuries after she accidentally fell.
The student had majored in Journalism and was only weeks away from her graduation, while the University's President said there were "no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise".
The New York Times reports Sydney Monfries, a 22-year-old student at Fordham University, plummeted down the inside of a clock and bell tower early Sunday.
'He told me some seniors [wanted to go] to the tower to take some pictures and have a good time before graduating, ' he said.
The senior continued, "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".
She said that the university is investigating how the students were able to get into the building where the clock tower is, which she said was locked. The 22-year-old and her friends reportedly climbed the tower's stairs in the Bronx, N.Y.at roughly 3 a.m. Sunday morning, and was later rushed to the hospital after getting critically injured.
The school will award Monfries a posthumous bachelor's degree.

Multiple people were injured and several homes were damaged in Hamilton, Mississippi, said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. This system will bring with it a threat of severe weather both in the morning and again later afternoon on Sunday .
The clock tower is supposed to be off-limits for students, but the Times reports that other students heard rumors about people finding a way inside.
New York Police Department arrived on the scene and found her lying on the ground with trauma to her head and body.
School officials confirmed the letter to The Post.
However, a university senior told Observer "the doors aren't always locked".
"You have to ride the ram", she said of a statue on campus, adding that students also "have to go into the tunnels underground and you have to go into the bell tower".
"They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning", the student claimed.
"Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends-theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief", he said. The group had sent a Snapchat video from the top of the tower. Monfries was due to graduate in May. Her family has been notified but her name was not yet released.
