Serial killer Bruce McArthur to be sentenced today

Last year McArthur waved his right to a preliminary hearing and last week he pleaded guilty to all eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Kirushna Kanagaratnam.

The second factor was McArthur's advanced age. He was sentenced to 11 concurrent life sentences, but applied for early parole after 15 years (the threshold at the time) and, when this was denied, applied at every future opportunity, causing the families of his victims reoccurring grief.

McArthur, 67, will be 91 when his first chance at parole comes up.

The judge says McArthur's guilty plea was a mitigating factor, as was the age the serial killer will be when he can apply for parole. "There's a fine line between retribution, which is an appropriate sentencing principle, and vengeance".

"If the accused either had a trial or would have been a younger man, I would have had no hesitation accepting (the Crown's) able argument to impose consecutive sentencing terms".

McArthur pleaded guilty to first degree murder in the deaths of eight men in a series of crimes dating back to 2010.

Toronto police have faced criticism over the length of time it took them to confirm that a serial killer was stalking the Gay Village and to arrest McArthur.

In a city that prides itself on being gay-friendly and welcoming to new Canadians, McArthur sought out men marginalised by their sexuality, ethnicity, immigration status or poverty.

McArthur sexually assaulted and forcibly confined many of his victims before murdering them, court heard.

McArthur dismembered all his victims and buried most of their remains in large planter pots at a home in midtown Toronto where he stored his landscaping equipment.

"The ability to decapitate, dismember his victims and do it repeatedly, is pure evil", he said. "This degradation and indignity of the victims shows a complete lack of humanity". I'll take it for face value that in this case that life will mean life at the end of the day.

Sixers trade former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz to Magic
Fultz, the former first-round pick from Washington, needs a fresh start on a team that will make him the starting point guard. Simmons, 29, is a 6-6 bench player, who is averaging just 6.9 points in 20.6 minutes per game for Orlando this season.

No doubt McArthur will live out the rest of his days in prison anyway.

Prosecutor Michael Cantlon told the court earlier this week that McArthur had also shaved facial hair from some of the men and kept it.

McArthur's victims were Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, Skandaraj Navaratnam and Soroush Mahmudi.

However, Helen Kennedy, the executive director of LGBT+ rights group Egale, said an independent judge-led investigation should be carried out into the police's handling of McArthur case specifically.

Kinsman had also marked "Bruce" in his diary on June 27, 2017 - the day he disappeared.

An entry in Kinsman's calendar indicated who he had planned to meet that afternoon: "Bruce".

On the day McArthur was arrested, January 18, 2018, police surveilling McArthur saw a man, identified in the agreed statement of facts as "John", meet up with McArthur and enter his apartment.

"Bruce McArthur is a sexual predator and killer who lured his victims on the pretext of consensual sex and he ended up killing them for his own warped and sick gratification", McMahon said.

At a news conference on Friday afternoon, Toronto Police Insp.

The families and friends of victims expressed frustration that the judge had not handed down the harshest possible sentence.
