Kamala Harris: ‘I am running for president of the United States’

When she was elected to the Senate six years later she was just the second black woman ever to serve in the chamber.

Harris plans to make a more elaborate announcement on Sunday in Oakland, California, where she grew up with her younger sister Maya. As Politico reports Monday, "amid an early wave of scrutiny of her career as a prosecutor", Harris and her team believe they "can turn the criticism on its head".

Said Harris in the clip: "The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values".

Harris announced her presidential bid on Martin Luther King Jr.

Leading up to her presidential announcement, the first-term senator had been actively elevating her national profile.

Her campaign could be aided by the schedule for the state-by-state party nominating process that is scheduled to begin in February 2020. In a bid to introduce herself, she launched a requisite campaign book "The Truths We Hold", on January 8. There's no apparent front-runner at this early stage and Harris will face off against several Senate colleagues. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.

Harris also may be one of a number of Californians to join the race. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., listens to Christine Blasey Ford testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Democratic nomination, is also considering a campaign.

SANA: Syria’s air defenses repel Israeli attack in country’s south
According to Arab media reports, including in Syria, it was in all likelihood a response to an attack against Hezbollah positions. SANA reported that "over eight targets" exploded over the capital, adding that most of the Israeli missiles had been intercepted.

Richard Odeja and representative John Delaney have also declared, but there is no clear front-runner as yet. Elections are slated to be held next year. "It is not reflective of who we are as Americans, and it is not in our best interest", she said. On Friday, Harris will travel to SC to attend the Pink Ice Gala in Columbia, which is hosted by a SC chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which Harris pledged as an undergraduate student at Howard University.

By the time she was enrolled at Westmount, Harris had mostly adjusted to her life in Quebec, recalling fondly how her by-then divorced parents both attended her graduation, her mother resplendent in a bright red dress and heels. Harris said. "Yes, I do".

If elected, Harris would be the United States' first female president.

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain on Sen.

In purely numerical terms, the Democratic field is starting to resemble the Republican gaggle of 17 candidates that ran for the GOP nomination in 2016 when NY businessman Donald Trump, rather unexpectedly, clambered over the likes of Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and others to win the party ticket to face Hillary Clinton. She is expected to invoke her experience in that post on the campaign trail, in particular, pointing to lawsuits she brought against banks in light of the mortgage crisis and against for-profit colleges for predatory practices.

"Instead of deciding either you're soft on crime or tough on crime, let's understand that if we're going to be smart with the taxpayer's dollars, let's get people out of the system instead of cycling through the revolving door of jail", she said. At least on Twitter, she's no match for the current president.

Kamala Harris' rise to political power started in California, where she served as a district attorney and attorney general for the state.

"She was a good person", said former classmate Dean Smith.
