Trump says he will nominate William Barr as next US Attorney General

Eventually, according to one unnamed source, Trump spoke to Barr in the White House about the job, asking "if he was interested", per the report.

Who the UN ambassador is (or what the United Nations does) is not of particular concern to President Trump. Trump had repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation, blaming that move for the eventual appointment of an independent counsel with a wide mandate to probe Trump's campaign and actions as president.

Barr also may face scrutiny about past comments questioning the political affiliations of Mueller's team and supporting Trump's decision previous year to fire FBI Director James Comey. The Washington Post reports that Trump pressed Barr on what he would do with the Mueller investigation, including whether or not he would recuse himself.

Barr, if confirmed, will take over for Sessions and (barring another recusal) oversee the Mueller investigation.

Having previously served as Attorney General under President George H.W. Bush, Mr. Barr is a known quantity, a man of the highest integrity and character, and has an impeccable reputation.

Paul McNulty, who worked at the Justice Department under Barr and a decade later became deputy attorney general, recalled him as decisive on the need for a strong federal response after the riots in Los Angeles following the acquittals on state charges of police officers involved in the Rodney King beating.

At least three dead in bomb attack in Iran's Chabahar
Iranian authorities said Rigi who headed the militant group Jundollah was captured on a flight from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan. Chabahar is a key port city on the Gulf of Oman about 100 kilometers west of Iran's border with Pakistan .

Republicans, who control the Senate, said Barr was well qualified.

"This is somebody who has been very much entrenched in the Washington environment", said Gene Kimmelman, a former Justice Department antitrust official who leads the consumer advocacy organization Public Knowledge.

The good news is that Barr will probably bring a level of experience and professionalism that the Trump administration is not accustomed to; the bad news is that he may be willing to help Trump evade accountability. Reportedly, she's shown loyalty to the president since joining his team, so Trump expects that he'll be able to keep her advocating on behalf of "America First" rather than playing nice with other countries. "To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", Barr said.

The 68-year-old Republican lawyer has an impressive political resume, spanning the CIA, White House and Department of Justice. Both nominations could be announced in the coming days, the Post said.

Others have made the argument that the Justice Department's order of succession should trump the Vacancies Reform Act, meaning Rosenstein should have been tapped to lead until a suitable replacement was nominated and Senate-confirmed. On Friday, he is expected to drop court filings about Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort, which could reveal more clues. Nauert would replace Niki Haley at the UN.
