Sen. Christopher S. Murphy Doubts Trump's Optimistic Claims on China Trade Talks


Trump's National Economic Council advisor Larry Kudlow tried to strike an update note while acknowledging to Fox News a deal "hasn't been signed and sealed and delivered yet".

Beijing is to start quickly implementing specific items where there is consensus with the United States and push forward on trade negotiations within the 90-day "timetable and road map", the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement yesterday morning.

Gao confirmed for the first time since the high-stakes meeting that China had agreed to implement consensus reached by both sides on agriculture, energy and cars, although he did not give details on any specific measures.

The two sides have given themselves 90 days to negotiate "structural changes" in the way China handles technology transfer, intellectual-property protection, cyber-theft and other issues.

But Murphy, like other Democratic members, believes Xi is playing Trump.

"Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin acknowledged investors" doubts over the talks' outcome.

"China is full of confidence in reaching an agreement within the next 90 days", the spokesman said.

High Chinese retaliatory tariffs on USA soybeans have caused the US exports of soybeans to drop by as much as 97 percent.

China, in turn, agreed to purchase a "substantial amount" of U.S. agricultural, energy and industrial products, among others, to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries, according to the White House.

He said the United States should look into a rule that would bar imports of Chinese products that used stolen USA intellectual property.

Kudlow said he did not think that auto tariffs were imminent, though he added that they were in Trump's "quiver of arrows".
