'Suspicious packages' sent to Clinton, Obama; CNN evacuated


A police bomb squad removed the package addressed to Brennan from CNN's NY office, which was evacuated. The incidents followed an earlier discovery when police on Monday "proactively detonated" a pipe-bomb found at a residence in New York's suburbs owned by billionaire philanthropist and Democratic donor George Soros.

Trump told a political rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday his government would conduct "an aggressive investigation".

"Let's get along", he said.

A package addressed to his Washington office ended up going to the return address - listed as the Florida office of Democrat congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious package was mailed there.

The FBI late Wednesday confirmed that two additional packages addressed to Rep. Maxine Waters had been intercepted that were similar in appearance to five others.

The White House condemned the attacks aimed at Democrats and other perceived foes of the administration.

Speaking later to reporters Friday evening before leaving for a political rally in North Carolina, said he knows Sayoc supported him but that he himself "bears no blame". They noted the president's recent praise of a GOP congressman who body-slammed a reporter, among other Trump statements.

Law enforcement officials said all the packages were similar: manila envelopes with bubble-wrap interior bearing six stamps and the return address of Florida Representative Schultz.

CNN reports: "It was not immediately clear who the package was addressed to, but CNN evacuated its newsroom as a precaution".

The pipe bombs targeted a list of prominent Democrats but did not cause any injuries. The package sent to CNN contained a live explosive and envelope with white powder, and officials said the substance was being tested to see if it was risky.

The powder was tested and determined to have been harmless, according to a law enforcement official.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Manhattan office reported that a suspicious package had been delivered to them as well; however, the AP reports that a NYPD spokesman said it was not a bomb and was unrelated to other devices. Investigators in California scrutinized a package sent to Democratic Sen.

The U.S. Postal Service has inspectors who are trained to recognize suspicious mail and operate X-ray machines as part of its screening process, officials said.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement, "These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law".

"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media", he said in a statement.

"The president, and especially the White House press secretary, should understand their words matter", said Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide. "Thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that".

Hillary Clinton was attending campaign events for Democrats in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday and was not at the family's NY residence at the time. It didn't reach her home in Westchester County.
