The former president's office released a statement in which he described her compositions and unmatched musicianship as helping to define the American experience.

As we previously reported, the 76-year-old was said to be "gravely ill" in a Detroit hospital, though there were no other details at the time.

The Queen of Soul passed away today after a battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Singer John Legend called her the greatest vocalist he had ever known.

Franklin reportedly has received more than 12 honorary degrees from prestigious universities throughout her life. WDET's Jay Butler says he ran into Franklin at a party and the Queen of Soul's health was not a topic for discussion.

Although she was born in Memphis, Detroit has been her home since she was a child and you could say she was raised by the church where her father served as a reverend.

The legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and announced past year she was retiring from music.
