Roma had announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement with Bordeaux to sign the 21-year-old.

However, Barca arrived at the last minute to steal Malcom away from Roma and Monchi, who has turned down the chance to head up transfer operations at Camp Nou on several occasions in the past.

"I knew there were so many teams interested in Malcom, including Barcelona, and it's for that reason we found an agreement as soon as possible".

"Martin told me that an offer had come in from Barcelona that was better than ours and that if we did not raise our offer we could not have the player", he added. "At 11 p.m. we submitted a formal document with the offer Pallotta was willing to make".

Barca and Roma will then play each other in the International Champions Cup in Dallas next week, although Malcom could make his debut before then in Saturday's game against Tottenham in Los Angeles.

"I want to tell our fans that we are continuing to work hard, working to identify a player that wants to come to Roma and is the equal or even better than Malcom".

Israel adopts divisive Jewish nation-state law
Instead, we now have a law that confirms the Arab population as second-class citizens. It would also prejudice the entire Israel against anyone who is not a Jew, he added.

# Roma then sent an improved bid.

"He was a player we liked a lot and had the profile we were looking for".

Media reports said Malcom's change of destination came after Barca's move for fellow Brazilian forward Willian broke down when they were unable to agree a transfer fee with Chelsea, leading them to turn to Bordeaux's fleet-footed wide forward.

Malcom scored 12 goals in 35 Ligue 1 appearances for Bordeaux last season and has made 96 appearances in all competitions since joining from Corinthians in January 2016.

He will now, though, become Barcelona's second major signing of the summer window following the arrival of Clement Lenglet from Sevilla .
