Unai Emery said in the past that he was going to rejuvenate Mesut Ozil in the upcoming season as he hopes that the German global will be at his best in his first season because he hopes that it could be a success. He defended the May meeting, saying there had been no political intent behind it, and writing: "I have two hearts, one German and one Turkish".

The German football association has rejected Ozil's claims of racism.

He also said his Turkish heritage had been used as a stick to beat him with over Germany's poor World Cup campaign in Russian Federation, which saw the team crash out at the group stage.

From Ankara, Erdogan said it's "truly unacceptable that a young man who has given everything to the German national team and has contributed to its success is facing such a racist attitude because of his religion".

Ozil reserved particular scorn for DFB chief Reinhard Grindel, whom he accused of "incompetence" and an "inability to do his job properly." .

Hoeness has sparked some anger across Europe after lambasting the Arsenal midfielder over his decision to retire from the German national team.

Ozil announced his global retirement on Sunday, weeks after Germany's first-round World Cup exit. Many politicians and journalists in Germany questioned Ozil's loyalty to his country after photographs emerged of Ozil, a third generation immigrant with a Turkish heritage, posing alongside Erdogan.

Some have done little to dispel this idea in the aftermath of Ozil's retirement, dismissing the statements as "whining" from a player desperately short of form.

"All of us want to help Mesut feel like it is his home here with us - like a family, and it is a family for every player".

Ozil chose to cut short his holiday to join up with his Arsenal team-mates in Singapore for pre-season and the former Real Madrid star is ready to put a turbulent summer behind him.
