PM gifts 200 cows to village in Rwanda


Addressing a joint press conference after holding bilateral talks this afternoon between the two leaders and their respective delegations at State House Entebbe, President Museveni and Premer Modi noted that due to a number of factors, there has been trade imbalance between Uganda and India in favour of India. He will gift 200 Indian cows to the African leader.

India on Tuesday extended two lines of credit worth almost $200 million to Uganda and signed a defence cooperation agreement with the African nation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with President Yoweri Museveni and discussed ways to strengthen the ties.

For his part, Modi thanked President Kagame for taking Rwanda from the abyss following the the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi that left more than a million dead.

In Uganda, the red carpet was rolled out for Modi who in 2007 visited when he was a minister.

Beijing is willing to work with Kigali to translate their traditional friendship into concrete benefits for the two countries and the two peoples, and open a new chapter in their friendly cooperative relations, Xi said.

PM Modi also announced two Lines of Credit worth almost $200 mn in energy infrastructure, agriculture and dairy sectors. He also announced a US$1 million dollar donation to Uganda toward supporting refugees in the country.

PM Modi and President Xi are expected to attend the BRICS Summit comprised of emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Mr. Modi gifted the cows to poor families at Rweru Model Village.

"On the global stage, Rwanda and India share a commitment to peace and security as major troop contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions", Kagame said.

Modi said; "It is a matter of pride that India has been an economic partner of Rwanda". Prime Minister praised the Indian community for their contribution in development of Rwanda and for their community service.

Prime Minister Modi also announced that India would build the Mahatma Ghandi Convention Centre in Uganda, a recreation centre that he said would be in honour of the late Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Ghandi.

On trade cooperation, Modi said a scheduled forum with the business community tomorrow Tuesday, "will help to further trade relations between both countries". However, the trip marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1997.
