IOC says Canada has incredible assets in Olympic bid

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday that seven countries have declared their interest in hosting 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

The IOC has overhauled the bidding process for Games after a sharp slump in interest from potential cities in recent years, cutting costs for bid cities and slashing the campaign time in half.

According to the TOC, Erzurum believe that their experience of hosting worldwide sport events will help their bid.

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Games and Sapporo staged the 1972 event, while Cortina organized the 1956 Winter Olympics.

Former host Salt Lake City is considered the USA front runner from among other interested cities Denver and Reno, due to it's existing legacy from the 2002 Games.

Dubi said there is also a built-in advantage for areas that are already global sports destinations.

"What it takes now is to make sure that the budgets that are being presented are extremely strong, down to the very last detail".

Turning to those present, Pope Francis told them that Jesus tells those discarded by society that they are important. The day commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles in Jerusalem before he was betrayed.

For the 2018 Olympics, South Korea´s Pyeongchang was opposed by only two other candidates while Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Games against competition from just one other city.

Alongside Erzurum, Canada's Calgary, Austria's Graz, Swedish capital Stockholm, Sion in Switzerland, Japan's Sapporo and a joint bid from Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo, Milan and Turin are all in the initial process.

The IOC is trying to avoid what happened during bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics when six European cities pulled out of bids, because of soaring costs, political unrest, and the lack of public support.

"What we are looking after is intelligent projects", he said.

The Executive Board will then recommend which cities to invite to bid, and the IOC Session will vote to approve the list.

A official candidature phase follows until September 2019.
