Giants select UTEP's Will Hernandez with second-round pick

One of the reasons that Barkley catapulted up draft boards in an era where running backs have traditionally been devalued across the league is his off-the-charts character, and leadership during his three seasons at Penn State. On Friday, they used the first of three picks (34th overall) on a player who will help protect Manning and open holes for Barkley: UTEP offensive guard Will Hernandez.

"If you have to try to make yourself fall in love with a player, it's wrong", Gettleman said, when asked whether Manning's status tempted him to trick himself into wanting a quarterback. In March, there were reports the Giants were considering trading Beckham this offseason, and he reportedly said he wouldn't play without a new contract extension. "But, my mindset is to not compare myself to anyone and just be me".

Shurmur expects Barkley to be an every-down player, but first he has to learn the offense, which is more diverse than the one Penn State employed.

"I had to be patient behind Saquon", Sanders said. Barkley is friendly and outgoing, confident yet humble, eager to please but direct in explaining exactly what he expects of himself. I'm a friendly guy. "I take football very serious. You have to earn the respect of your teammates first, and I'm under that mindset that nothing is given to you, you have to earn everything".

Barkley plans to enter the NY locker room with more personality.

Barkley's parents, Alibay and Tonya Johnson, attended the news conference, along with sister Shaquona and Whitehall High friends Kayla Cunningham, Nick Shafnisky and James Wah Jr. With Saquon Barkley the team's first-round choice, Hernandez comes in to create holes for him to run through as well as protect veteran QB Eli Manning.

Alibay Barkley spent the past four months guiding his son through the predraft process, splitting his time between Coplay and Florida, where Barkley trained. "You will never be happy with the pick".

Before moving outside Allentown, Pa., Barkley grew up in the Bronx, where he cheered for the Jets, whose logo is tattooed in red on his father's forearm and who might have been his ideal destination.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman could go offensive line again before this draft is up. "If he does half of what he did there, he'll still be great".
