Law enforcement: Man shot himself outside White House

The White House was placed on lock down Saturday after reports of shots being fired near the building, according to several witnesses.

In a statement, the Secret Service said: "At approximately 11.46am, a white male suffered a self-inflicted gun-shot wound to the head outside the North White House fence line". Police say they are working to notify next of kin.

There are no other injuries relating to the shooting, the Secret Service added.

The president is in Florida.

Disturbances outside the White House are not rare.

It happened in an area between the Lafayette Square park and the White House that is popular among pedestrians who use it as a cut-through or as a place to take pictures or protest. Traffic around the White House was impacted by the order, the agency said. Trump is expected to return to Washington D.C. this evening to attend the Gridiron Dinner. A Tennessee woman intentionally rammed her auto into a barrier outside of the White House on February 23.
