Google Unveils US $329 Chrome OS Tablet Ahead of Apple's Education Event

Students can work precisely with interactive apps, sketch, take notes and capture ideas that can be shared with classmates and teachers.

After first being sighted earlier this year, the worlds first Chrome OS tablet from Acer is now official, with Acer and Google this morning announcing the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 (D651N) for the education market.

Say hello to the Acer Chromebook Tab 10, which both companies are quick to point out is the first educational tablet created to run Chrome OS. Not to be outdone, Google's first tablet, powered by the same operating system found on the millions of Chromebook laptops in classrooms across the U.S., was unveiled today, March 26.

Acer will sell the Chromebook Tab 10 for $320, which is a reasonable price.

The tablet includes a front-facing 2MP webcam and dual speakers and microphone for any video conferencing that they want to do, and also a 5MP rear camera to allow students to capture video and still images - including notes on the board.

At 1.21 pounds, it is slightly heavier than the entry-level iPad and about 2.5mm thicker at 9.98mm. This IPS panel supports an included Wacom EMR stylus that does not need a battery and can be seamlessly inserted into the tablet for storage. They can make updates, configure apps, as well as manage extensions and policies with the Chrome Education license [1]. It also ships with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Students will stay connected to their school's network with fast and reliable 2x2 MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity and can connect to displays and other devices via Bluetooth 4.1. It also features combo headphone/speaker jack and a MicroSD card reader. It's Google's AR technology that maps the classroom and then places 3D objects in it for students to study.

The Acer Chromebook Tab 10 arrives this April with a $329 (about £230, AU$425) price tag that seems a little high at first blush, but it's basically $499 (about £350, AU$640) Samsung Chromebook Plus specs in a tablet-sized device.

The Acer Chromebook Tab 10 is going to support augmented reality in the future which will let students learn in new ways with Expeditions AR.
