White House: 'Flake-Graham-Durbin' Agreement on Immigration 'Dead on Arrival'

During her Wednesday press briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders touted President Donald Trump's efforts to fight crime.

Sanders said the new White House offer will represent "a compromise that members of both parties can support", but she did not provide details.

"After decades of inaction by Congress, it's time we work together to solve this issue once and for all", Sanders said.

"This framework will fulfill the four agreed upon pillars: securing the border and closing legal loopholes, ending extended family chain migration, canceling the visa lottery, and providing a permanent solution on DACA".

Democrats and even some Republicans have criticized the president for his approach to the immigration deal-making, saying they were looking for more concrete guidance from him about the contours of a bill he would sign.

"It's going to happen, at some point in the future, over a period of 10 to 12 years", Trump told reporters.

Trump had rejected the offer.

"I don't think that helps us very much", Sanders said of legislation crafted with only one chamber in mind. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said he didn't know and added, "But they're not writing the bill".

Alexander suggested Trump didn't speak out enough about the issue, and Sanders said Alexander accused Trump of being complicit in a school shooting.

Trump and White House aides have had meetings and calls with lawmakers for months about an immigration overhaul. The Trump administration's phaseout of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program - which was supposed to be completed on March 5 - is on hold, and Homeland Security officials said Saturday they'll start accepting applications again to comply with a court order. The goal is to produce consensus legislation that would be the starting point for Senate debate on immigration, which is expected to begin February 8, said Sens.

As a result, Trump has been forced to ask Congress for USA taxpayer funds for the wall.

"After the Vegas shooting, you said it was an unspeakable tragedy from that podium, said it was a day for consoling survivors and mourning those who we lost".

The plan would eliminate the visa lottery, but used those passes to create a new amnesty for Haitians, Salvadorans and other would-be illegal immigrants who've been in the US under special protections because of natural disasters back home. "I think that is something that applies regardless of whether you are a high school student or whether you're in a professional career, and I think it's good advice and something you can take with you no matter what".

The retreat by Democrats brought an end to the three-day government shutdown, but roiled immigration activists who blasted Democrats for caving to Republicans with nothing gained by the promise of a Senate vote.
