The town of Monument hopes to install way finding signs around town by the Fourth of July to direct visitors to area attractions.
The signs will be installed in eight locations around downtown Monument and will not interfere with signs that are put up by the Historic Monument Merchants Association.
“The locations are intended to direct people to certain areas,” Tom Kassawara, director of development services, said.
Two of the signs, which will be located at the entrances to downtown, will be larger signs which will direct people toward everything. One of these signs will be located on Second Street west of Beacon Lite Road and the other will be located on Third Street and Beacon Lite Road. These signs will point visitors to historic Monument, downtown shops and attractions.
A third sign will be installed on Second Street, right before Jefferson Street, and will point to historic Monument, downtown shops, dining, Limbach Park and the lake.
“We're identifying some of the featured areas that we may want to feature in our marketing plan as well,” Kassawara added. “We're trying to tie the signage to the marketing plan and get people some direction as to where they need to go to see the attractions.”
Other signs will be located on Jefferson Street and Chapala Plaza, Second Street near Wisdom Tea House, Third and Washington Streets, Jefferson and Third Streets and Second and Front Streets, looking east. These signs will have arrows pointing to shops and dining.
“The signs are not specific to businesses specifically because we don't think the town should be advertising a specific business,” Kassawara said.
Treasurer Pam Smith added that as the town website continues to be developed the plan is to have an interactive map of all the businesses in Monument so that people can click on a specific business and get all the information about that business.
The signs will be attached to existing light posts and will be visible from vehicles. Kassawara said the only expense for the signs will be to have them made and installed. The town has budgeted $25,000 for the signs in this year's budget.
The board of trustees directed Kassawara to get quotes on signs that have an antique look that are bracketed and rod iron or bronze to match the look of the light posts. They also asked Kassawara to get input from HMMA on the signs.
