Colin Powell Rips Republicans, Says Trump's Foreign Policy Is 'In Shambles'

Earlier Friday, Republicans emerged from the closed-door testimony of Intelligence Community Inspector General Micheal Atkinson calling for Mr. Schiff to step aside from the impeachment inquiry he is leading.

Even as Democrats ramp up their impeachment efforts by lining up a parade of officials to testify before Congress, Republican Party leaders are pushing back in defense of President Donald Trump.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in September that the House Intelligence Committee had not communicated with the whistleblower before the complaint about President Donald Trump's phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was filed.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a Trump ally, said on Saturday the State Department had issued an initial response to a request by the House Foreign Affairs Committee for documents tied to U.S. contacts with the Ukrainian government.

"I was a Republican who was Ronald Reagan's national security advisory".

"And so, they need to get a grip, and when they see things that are not right they need to say something about it, because our foreign policy is in shambles right now in my humble judgement", he added.

"I was really thinking along the lines of wanting to get him to come in to testify", Schiff told the Daily Beast.

They're also threatening to issue a subpoena on Friday to the White House if it does not turn over documents related to Ukraine. Trump said Friday the White House would be sending a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to formally object to the inquiry.

Next, Powell pointed to Trump reportedly using a sharpie to circle the state of Alabama on last month's Hurricane Dorian forecast as an example of something that was "hard to understand".

"In my time, in her time, one of us would have gone to the President and said, 'you screwed up.' So we've got to fix it, and we'll put out a correction".

"I think Senator Rubio said it a couple days ago, he's getting the press all spun up about this", he added. "They've finally convinced her to impeach the President".

It is "completely inappropriate" for a president to encourage a foreign state to investigate a political rival, Republican Sen. They ordered the Commerce Department to go out and backup whatever the president mis-said.

"When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for China's investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated", he had said in another tweet.

Retired four-star General Colin Powell addressed Trump and the current state of Republican politics during a Tuesday evening Jefferson Series panel discussion on China with fellow former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that aired Sunday.
