The new cast members announced yesterday also includes SNL's first Asian-American cast member, Bowen Yang, previously a writer on the show.

He was recognized as a New Face at the 2019 Just for Laughs Festival, has performed at Comedy Central's Clusterfest and co-hosts the podcast "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast".

"If you're a comic & you think calling Chinese ppl ch--s is amusing, you're a hack AND a racist", actress Cindy Chu wrote.

Gillis is one of three new cast members added to SNL on Thursday, the others being Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang.

In the clip from September 2018, which Simons noted was deleted, Gillis mocks Chinatown and refers to Chinese people by slurs.

Gillis: "I love to [incoherent] f*cking racist".

Vulture reports that in another episode Gillis and McCusker called comedians Judd Apatow and Chris Gethard "white faggot comics" and "f***ing gayer than ISIS" for using a confessional style in their routines.

And a lot of us, including me, disagree with some of your tactics and some of your ideas. DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

As it turns out, Gillis's fellow Groundling, Shane Gillis is also a talented stand up. I'm happy to apologize to anyone who's actually offended by anything I've said.

"I'm a comedian who pushes boundaries", he wrote.

Yang became the fourth cast member of Asian descent following Rob Schneider, Fred Armisen, and Nasim Pedrad (who hails from Iran which is considered Western Asia).

On, the Saturday Night Live comedian shared an apology for his controversial, racially-charged video.

'My intention is never to hurt anyone but I am trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks'. The writer/performer popped up on Saturday Night Live a year ago as Kim-Jong un in a sketch with host Sandra Oh.

Saturday Night Live will be returning to NBC later this month when Woody Harrelson hosts with musical guest Billie Eilish on September 28.
