"Our economy is so well balanced that a strike of this type for two or three weeks is for most of us not really going to have a major impact", Borchers said.

Talks continued even as GM accused picketers in Tennessee of blocking traffic, placing screws and nails on public roads, harassing motorists and damaging vehicles. He says the only pay he and other hourly workers are receiving is $250 a week from the union. "We want companies in this country to be decent corporate citizens, to treat their workers with respect and dignity".

GM had a hefty 77-day supply of vehicles at the end of August, but big SUVs were only at about 55 days, lower than the industry average of 61.

"We've been off all week but we've been up there every day because that's our livelihood, and we're fighting for what is right", Robertson said. 40 a week, a heavier load than some of the larger plants.

The Harrodsburg plant will still employ 1,000 workers during the strike, and Hitachi hopes the strike will end so it can once again staff the GM lines.

A spokesperson for GM did not immediately return a request for comment.

DETROIT, MI - SEPTEMBER 25: Democratic presidential candidate, Sen.

Nabbout's union local represents workers at five local companies that do some or a lot of manufacturing for General Motors. She says it's time for the state to be active in protecting workers.

As many as nine UAW members have been arrested for blocking traffic into and out of the Spring Hill plant, according to news reports and social media posts.

Members of Local 431 have been supported by other Denver-area unions, including other UAW locals, the Teamsters, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and others, who have donated food and picketed with striking workers outside the Aurora facility.

The union says they are asking for fair wages, affordable health care and job security. She held a UAW sign outside the Fort Wayne Assembly plant Saturday. Now not only does the UAW have to dig itself out of the hole created by a concessionary contract, it must also contend with how an EV future will restructure the industry in a way that cuts jobs. But as the strike moves into its second week, the company announced that they would have to temporarily lay off 120 employees.

EVs are expected to increase their share of the auto market dramatically over the next few decades, rising to 10 percent in mid-2020 and to over half by 2040. The company is raking in cash after the economy recovered, Sanders said, but hoarding profits instead of investing in its workers.
