NASA joins ISRO to track moon lander Vikram

On 10 September, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter has spotted the lander, but officials declined to describe its condition. The lander houses rover Pragyan that was scheduled to conduct a series of experiments on the lunar surface.

As the ISRO continues to make all-out efforts to establish a link with Chandrayaan-2's "Vikram" lander, USA space agency (NASA) has also reportedly joined the "home-calling" exercise.

The Vikram lander has three payloads inside it: RAMBHA (Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere), ILSA (Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity), and chaSTE (Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment).

ISRO is trying to re-establish link with its Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu near Bengaluru. ISRO had abruptly lost contact with Chandrayaan 2's landing module when Vikram was just 2.1 km above the lunar surface.

Meanwhile, the ISRO on Thursday said officials of the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and the JPL visited its headquarters and met its Chairman K Sivan.

How much time does ISRO have to track Vikram Lander?

Even though the lender has not broken, the hard landing of Vikram has made it difficult to maintain communication with the lander. "The attempts will be made till September 20-21 when the sunlight will be there in the area where the Vikram has landed", an ISRO official preferring anonymity told IANS.

"This is a very groundbreaking development", she said, adding that the mission will pave way for better understanding and a new approach towards the Moon and missions for the scientists to come.

Vikram lander was allotted 14 days to do its job. During the lunar night period, instruments on board the lander could get damaged.
