Speaking in Beijing, the Chinese government's top diplomat, State Councilor Wang Yi, said China welcomed North Korea's recent "positive signals" on resuming talks with the US. Trump said he requested Bolton's resignation while Bolton maintained that he offered his resignation. "I hope we've left in good standing, maybe we have and maybe we haven't".

"John wasn't in line with what we were doing", he added.

"We were set back very badly when John Bolton talked about the Libyan model. what a disaster", Trump told reporters at the White House. DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name. And a lot of us, including me, disagree with some of your tactics and some of your ideas.

Trump said Bolton, with his abrasive, hardline approach, "wasn't getting along with people in the administration that I consider very important".

Trump had been growing more impatient with the failure to oust socialist Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro through a USA -led campaign of sanctions and diplomacy in which Bolton was a driving force. Bolton had opposed such a step.

The North Korean leader reportedly said the launches of two projectiles on Tuesday have helped them verify the technical parameters of their new missile system and now they only need to test its multiple firing system.

All that almost fell apart in Hanoi when Trump followed Bolton's advice and handed Kim a piece of paper that bluntly called for the transfer of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and bomb fuel to the United States.

Thousands of people were stranded at the airport Monday evening, with officials preparing to distribute blankets and food. The mercury climbed to 37.9 C in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, marking a season-high for the central Japan city.

Pompeo continued: "I think President Trump would be very disappointed if Chairman Kim doesn't return to the negotiating table or conducts missile tests that are inconsistent with the agreements that they made when the two of them were together these three times".

While offering talks, North Korea still warned its dealings with the USA may end if Washington fails to come to the negotiating table without new acceptable proposals.

KCNA also released photos of the test that showed a smiling Mr Kim, who has been on hand for nearly all of his state's series of missiles and weapon tests that started in May, standing by a launcher.

Back in April 2018, Bolton talked in an interview about applying the "Libyan model" to North Korea on denuclearization.

"This change in personnel could carve out some space for new approaches or thinking about what defines success and how to achieve it", said Jenny Town at 38 North, a Washington-based North Korea project.

She warned that "if the U.S. side fingers again the worn-out scenario which has nothing to do with new decision methods at the DPRK-U.S. working negotiation to be held with so much effort, the DPRK-U.S. dealings may come to an end".
