Order returns to Hong Kong airport, but tensions linger

Hong Kong International Airport was shut down overnight leaving all departing flights grounded after thousands of protesters staged a sit-in in the main terminal.

Shareholders of Cathay Pacific have condemned the "violent" protests after the airline's shares fell to a decade low. The editor-in-chief of the state-run Global Times newspaper, Hu Xijin, tweeted that the man was a journalist with the paper.

The huge protests in June over planned legislation to allow extradition from Hong Kong to China have morphed into a protest movement making wider democratic demands, including action against police violence and free elections based on universal suffrage.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Hong Kong is providing regular updates and is assessing the situation daily.

"The way to handle last night was chaotic", said Kate Flannery from Australia, who was travelling to Paris.

China Daily columnist Chen Weihua also noted that "It would be hard to imagine the USA reaction if Chinese [diplomats] were meeting leaders of Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter or Never Trump protesters". "We stand here to obstruct, only for one single reason".

Protesters are demanding that it must nonetheless be withdrawn completely. The carrier later suspended two pilots. Sun Hung Kai Properties, controlled by the Asia's third richest family, also called on Tuesday for the restoration of social order and backed Lam.

Nearly 75 million passengers travelled through Hong Kong Airport in 2018, making it the eighth busiest airport in the world and the fourth busiest in Asia. Passengers travelling to or from the airport during the next few days are urged to check the status of their flights.
