Nadal goes past Federer’s tally of most ATP Masters 1000 wins

The victor past year in Toronto for his fourth title in the event, Nadal won his 380th ATP Masters 1000 match, a day after breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the tour record.

MONTREAL, Aug 10 ― Rafael Nadal took a set to get started yesterday before overhauling Fabio Fognini 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to move into the semi-finals of the ATP Montreal Masters. Nadal has 82 singles victories, winning the French Open in June for his second title of the year. Nadal has won all four sets this tournament and his serve has gotten slightly better each set, so he's playing himself into better form as the tournament drags out.

Nadal told the ATP: "We talked a little bit with the team before the match that maybe sometimes if he was blocking the returns it was a chance to go to the net". He said-"When we play on outdoor courts it is better to play without this kind of wind".

Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut will also meet after wins over Hubert Hurkacz and Richard Gasquet respectively.

Thiem will next face eight-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russian Federation, who beat Cristian Garin of Chile 6-3, 6-3.

World number two Nadal was the only major seed to survive a quarter-final cull after defeats for Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev.
